This painting depicts the iconic moment when Jesus blesses and breaks the first loaf of bread to feed the 5000. The sky in harmonic rhythm echoes the moment. All eyes watch Jesus’ hands holding high the bread. The dove-like light coming from the clouds illuminates the bread as it is broken and brings into focus all the words that Jesus will later say pertaining to himself as the bread from heaven, the words of life. As the earthly crowds in this physical moment are charged with such expectancy, even though they would not have understood everything yet, so to the sky seems to be filled with tongues of fire above their heads. This painting reveals this event in Jesus’ life as the moment of introduction to the world of just who he is.
