Here, Now
Acrylic on canvas 32” x 48” I painted this image from a little sketch I had made the day before of a figure pointing to the ground or writing in the sand. At first, I thought of the woman taken in the act of adultery where Jesus said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." But I felt that the moment after, where Jesus was bent down writing in the sand, represented a pivotal moment for decision making. The hand pointing down is huge with its foreshortened view, which means the viewer is watching from very close up... almost as if we the viewer are the one caught in sin and being offered a new beginning. The figures behind have fallen in behind Jesus as followers; they have gathered under his banner, so to speak. The finger pointing to the ground accompanies a rallying cry for bravery and a return to putting Jesus' priorities first... "Here and now, choose whom you will serve".
