Invitation
Acrylic on canvas 36” x 48” 1 Corinthians 9:22-23 Before painting, all I had was a sketch of a female reaching out with her hand. I was unsure how the composition would take shape until the worship began. David Ruis was preparing to lead, but before the music began, Carol, a First Nations person, began with the a drum and her voice. To me it was an invitation to come to the borderlands where people are actually awaiting God in their prayer. More than a stirring of empathy for the lost to whom we must go, this is an invitation by a very spiritual people who say, “walk with us”. From this moving moment the hands reaching out and the delighted faces took shape. The one in front reminds me of a younger version of Carol and the young man behind is like James, a young leader in our church. The two figures swirl in the light of dawn borne on eagle feathers. They invite the grace of Jesus to be complete. We walk with them to be complete.
