In the Centre of My Nothingness – Glory
Acrylic on canvas 36” x 48” Philippians 2:5-11 Often when I have painted during worship I get the sense that the white light bursting in, as it sometimes does, represents the Holy Spirit's presence. Here it was more of a reflection, not of a heavenly visitation, but of a wholly emptying moment and the absence of self-centredness. The upward movement of the flames emanate from the worship like figures below. The event of such worship somehow contributes to the emptying, which is not hard to imagine. But also, the white amoebic centre takes on the look of glory emanating outward. This idea is borrowed from Thomas Merton's thinking, that God's glory is somehow associated with our nothingness... but in a good way
